The Bhagalpur Nagar Nigam was established in the year 1864. After seventeen years the Bhagalpur Nagar Nigam was promoted as Municipal Corporation on dated 15th April 1981 and known it is known as Bhagalpur Municipal Corporation. The Bhagalpur Municipal Corporation administers all responsibility according to Patna Municipal Corporation Act, 1951. On date 24th April 1981, the Bhagalpur Municipal Corporation received notification from the governor of Bihar state letter number 572 for following Patna Municipal Corporation Act, 1951 to fulfil responsibilities.
Presently the Bhagalpur Municipal Corporation follows Nagarpalika Act, 2007 notified by the Government of Bihar. The first elections of councillor of Municipal Corporation were held in the 2002 year and last elections of councillors were held in May 2012 by the State Election committee. There are total fifty-one wards consists under the BMC.
